Charles Bannister—Family man. Successful Businessman. True leader.
Charles Bannister, like thousands of others, is proud to call Gwinnett home and is dedicated to doing what it takes to ensure that Gwinnett has a brighter future for years to come. Chairman Charles Bannister has represented Gwinnett County families for over 30 years, as a Lilburn City Councilman, Lilburn Mayor, State Representative and now as the Gwinnett County Commission Chairman.
Charles ran for Chairman in 2004 because he saw that change was needed. Gwinnett was losing jobs, crime rates were skyrocketing, and traffic congestion was worse than ever before. Bannister promised to enhance Gwinnett’s police force, focus on creating jobs and work to reduce traffic congestion. After being elected, Bannister rolled up his sleeves and went to work and he kept his promises.
Prior to serving as Chairman, Bannister served 18 years in the Georgia General Assembly where he built strong relationships with federal and state legislators, state officials and Department of Transportation officials. As Chairman, he has utilized those contacts to bring millions of dollars for transportation improvements to Gwinnett County.
Raised in Tucker, Georgia, Charles attended both the University of Georgia and Georgia State University. In 1962, Charles made a promise to his country and followed through on that promise by serving in the U.S. Marine Reserve for five years. Driven by an ambition to succeed in small business, Charles relied on his entrepreneurial skills to begin a career in the insurance and financial services field. During a 30-year career, Charles operated several successful insurance agencies serving Gwinnett and northeast Georgia.
Charles and Glenda, his wife of 46 years, have lived in Lilburn for 36 years. They have 3 children and seven grandchildren.
